High-performance lubricants are rapidly gaining popularity and are preferred over mineral oil lubricants. This is due to their excellent properties like low-traction coefficient, reduced power consumption and wear of gears, increased service life, and reduced flammability, among many others. Since high-performance lubricants, such as, synthetic lubricants, semi-synthetic lubricants, and bio-based lubricants, provide better and improved characteristics, they are projected to gain continual market share during the forecast period. The improved properties make them suitable for extreme high-temperature applications, and other complex and specific applications such as heavily charged gearboxes. Moreover, the adoption rate of these lubricants is significantly high, as they reduce the maintenance and replacement cost of the industries. Thus, the rise in demand for high-performance lubricants is facilitating market growth.

Group I segment, under the group category, captured the largest market share of 45.97% in 2019, and comprises the oldest and least expensive base oils, within the lubricants market. They contain more than 0.03 percent sulfur, less than 90 percent saturates, a sulfur content between 300 ~ 3,000 ppm, and are often conventional petroleum base oils. In addition to possessing less oxidative stability, the group I base oils also have relatively low viscosity compared to other oils. They are predominantly used as automotive and marine lubricants, and in older engine oils. Owing to the increasing use of group I base oils, their production capacities have significantly decreased over the years. Moreover, the demand for group I oils is at a constant rise, as they continue to remain the largest single group within the global market.

Conversely, group V segment, under the group category, is expected to be the fastest-growing segment, harboring a CAGR of 2.04% during the forecast period. Group V base oils comprise synthetic base oils, including esters, polyalkylene glycol (PAG), silicone, phosphate esters, polyisobutylene, bio lubes, and alkyl naphthalene, among others, that are mixed with oils to enhance their lubricant properties. Esters are primarily used to formulate lubricants, and their main classifications include natural esters, synthetic oleochemical esters, and petrochemical esters. Additionally, factors like the growing demand for fatty acid esters and increasing adoption rates of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL) for vessel general permit (VGP), contribute to the global ester segment growth.

Major restraints hindering the market growth include slowdowns in the automobile industry, lengthening of oil drain intervals, and disruptions from the electric vehicle market. Global passenger vehicle sales plummeted from 81.8 million units in 2017 to 80.6 million in 2018, making it the first annual decline since 2009. Also, the COVID-19 outbreak, and the economic recession caused by market lockouts in 2020, have instigated unparalleled chaos in the global automotive industry.

Moreover, manufacturers across the world had at least 20% more manufacturing capacity than they initially required before encountering the coronavirus. Thus, the idle fabrication gap leads to unnecessary expenses without revenue, and closing underused plants may become a matter of survival, as profits further plunge. Furthermore, the transportation industry documented as a vital end user, contributing xx% in 2019, with automobiles constituting a large part. Thus, a slowdown in automotive sales is a major factor restraining the global lubricants market growth.
