Thermal grease also known as thermal paste, thermal gel, heat paste etc. i.e. a compound is a thermally conductive but electrically insulating and normally used as an interface material between the heat sink and heat sources. Most of the microprocessors have irregular top surface. Even some have slight curves, and others have microscopic grooves, producing air voids between the heat sink and microprocessor and hence reducing the heat dissipation capacity of the heat sink. The thermal grease helps to maximize the heat transfer between the interface area by removing air gaps and voids. They are made up of silicone or even hydrocarbon oils loaded with conductive fillers. Most common fillers used are boron nitride, aluminum oxide, zinc oxide etc.
Performance limited by physical properties and high usage of thermal interface materials are the major factors hindering the thermal interface materials market. The conductivity of thermal interface material is majorly determined by using procedures like ASTM D 5470, among others. The new procedure denoted by the bulk resistance method may adversely affect the growth of the market.
