QATAR LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) MARKET

Natural gas is a fossil fuel majorly comprising methane. Like other fossil fuels, it is formed deep beneath the earth’s surface on account of the decomposition of dead plants and animals under extreme heat and pressures. Natural gas is cleaner than most other fossilized fuels. However, its calorific value is lower than the fossil fuels such as petrol, diesel, and LPG.

Qatar holds the world’s third-largest natural gas reserves and is also recognized as one of the major suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) globally. With nearly 14% of the total world’s natural gas reserves, the country is one of the largest LNG exporters, accounting for approximately 32% of natural gas exports across the world.

Oil and gas are the main components of the growing Qatari economy, and about 70% of the total revenue gained by the country is derived from its oil and gas resources. The oil and gas sector has been gaining a significant share, equating to more than 85% of the export earnings as well as 60% of its gross domestic product (GDP).

In 2021, Qatar dropped its prices while pushing ahead with a project worth $29 billion in order to further boost its fuel exports by more than 50%, blocking the prospects of other new plants. A trading team has also been established to compete in the nascent spot market, entering Asia more aggressively than before. Moreover, with the increase in the level of competition, especially from countries like the United States and Australia, the Persian Gulf states have been forced to become more agile and attract buyers from Asia, a hot spot for the demand for gas. In addition, the total proved reserves of the country as of 2020 are 25.2 trillion cubic meters, constituting 2.6% of the global total proved reserves.

However, in areas where transportation using pipelines is not possible, liquefying natural gas is a cost-effective way to transport the same. Natural gas is cooled to about -260 degrees Fahrenheit to form LNG, and the volume reduction is to the tune of 600 times the original.

Since LNG is highly flammable and major exporting is undertaken via the sea, industry players must follow several regulations. The key regulatory authorities governing the LNG market in Qatar are the Ministry of Energy Affairs and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).

Some of the top LNG companies in the country are Qatargas, RasGas, and others.
