NETHERLANDS LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) MARKET

NETHERLANDS LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) MARKET
Natural gas is a fossil fuel majorly comprising methane. Like other fossil fuels, it is formed deep beneath the earth’s surface due to the decomposition of dead plants and animals under extreme heat and pressures. Although natural gas is cleaner than the majority of other fossilized fuels, its calorific value is lower than fossil fuels such as petrol, diesel, and LPG. Liquified natural gas (LNG) entails compressed natural gas liquified at -290 degrees, useful for transportation and heat generation.

The increasing oil prices globally have diverted the attention of consumers to natural gas. With Europe being the major importer of natural gas in the liquefied form, the demand in the Netherlands has significantly increased. The gas fields in the Netherlands play a vital role in balancing the demand and supply across Northern Europe.
The Government of the Netherlands limited its annual natural gas production at the Groningen field, a part of the policy to boost production from smaller fields. This effectively stabilizes the seasonal demand fluctuations. In this regard, the government overlaid Groningen production as a whole at 1,059 billion cubic feet (bcf) for 2015, with regional limits on gas production instigated as well.
In addition, the Eemskanaal, Loppersum, and Southwest clusters plugged their production at about 70 bcf, 100 bcf, and 350 bcf, respectively, in 2015. These regional clusters manufactured below their imposed limits in 2015, and the total production during the same year at the Groningen field was 990 bcf.
The Netherlands, being innovative in the avenue of climate change activism, has installed its first bio-LNG station in Westport, Amsterdam, in the year 2020. The bio-LNG has lower CO2 emission as compared to diesel, and the CO2 produced during the process is reused, thus resulting in 100% CO2 neutral fuel.
The top LNG companies in the country are Bomin Linde LNG, Mitsui LNG, Vopak LNG, Gasunie, etc.
