  • Brine
    • Brine is expected to be the largest source type in the global lithium mining market during the forecast period.
    • Lithium carbonate, represented chemically as CLi2O3 or Li2CO3, serves as the primary commercial form of lithium and goes by various names, such as dilithium carbonate, Lithonate, and Lithobid. With a molecular weight of 73.9, it is derived from carbonic acid, its parent compound.
    • The production of lithium carbonate from lithium brines involves several processes. Initially, lithium carbonate is generated by the addition of hydrochloric acid, resulting in a lithium chloride compound. This lithium chloride is then utilized in the electrolysis process to produce lithium metal.
    • The resulting lithium metal is a combination of lithium and potassium chlorides, characterized by a lower melting point ranging from 400°C to 420°C (750°F to 790°F) compared to pure lithium chloride, which melts at 610°C (1,130°F). 
    • Graphite anodes are employed in the electrolysis process for lithium production, while steel cathodes are utilized. At the cathode, pure lithium forms and coalesces on the surface of the electrolyte to create a molten pool, shielded from air reaction by a thin electrolyte film.
    • The molten lithium is then extracted from the cell and poured into molds at temperatures slightly above its melting point, leaving behind the solidified electrolyte. The solid lithium metal is subsequently re-melted, during which insoluble lithium materials either rise to the surface or settle at the bottom of the melting pot. This remelting step reduces the potassium content to less than 100 parts per million (ppm).
