The 16-bit microcontrollers can execute between 20 and 40 MIPS; while the new 32-bit microcontrollers often can run between 80 to 100 MIPS. This is a significant improvement in processing power and speed. Since many 32-bit microcontrollers are built on smaller geometries, they often get the benefits of low power. The smaller geometry typically means better power figures, lower current consumption and lower valid input voltages.
