Dual-sensor smoke detectors use photoelectric and ionization technologies in one alarm. The sensors work together for comprehensive fire and smoke detection. However, the industry lacks standards for setting up individual sensor sensitivity in dual-sensor alarms. At the same time, a dual-function alarm could have a non-functional ionization sensor and still fulfill the national standards set by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as far as the photoelectric sensor works. A photoelectric or optical smoke detector uses a light beam to detect the smoke’s presence. These alarm types are more efficient in notifying when a fire originates from smoldering sources like a lit cigarette, as per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Also, the sensing chamber of a photoelectric smoke alarm consists of a light-sensitive sensor and a light-emitting diode. The LED light beam’s straight line gets scattered even by the small presence of suspended smoke particles. 

Whereas ionization smoke detectors come with a built-in ionization chamber supported by two plates and voltage in between. These detectors ionize the air in its internal sensing chamber using a minuscule amount of radioactive material. The ionized air becomes a good conductor of current and enables its movement among the two fully charged electrodes inside the chamber. These smoke alarms are highly sensitive to small smoke particles and respond 30-90 seconds faster to fast flaming fires than photoelectric smoke alarms. In addition, they are cheaper than photoelectric smoke detectors.
