A notable development in the country’s market is the introduction of Gazelle’s cargo e-bike model, the Gazell D10, in collaboration with Aluca and DOCKR, a mobility-as-a-service startup. Termed as the Light Electrical Freight Transporter (LEFT), this cargo e-bike is designed to accommodate up to two standard carriage boxes with Euro Pallet dimensions. With a volumetric capacity of one cubic meter and a load capacity of 100 kg, the LEFT is equipped with a 250-watt Bosch Performance CX motor as well as a 1000 Wh battery.

Germany’s regulatory landscape also underwent a significant transformation with the publication of a regulation in the Federal Law Gazette. This regulation paved the way for the legal usage of light electric vehicles on public roads, including e-scooters and Segways. Prior to this, the operation of e-scooters was prohibited in the country. 

Light electric vehicles are now defined as motor vehicles with electric propulsion and a maximum speed ranging from 6 km/h (3.7 m/h) to 20 km/h (15.5 m/h), meeting specific criteria regarding design, dimensions, and power ratings. These vehicles are required to utilize bike lanes or, in their absence, adhere to street regulations for usage. Therefore, the abovementioned aspects are expected to play an important role in influencing the e-bike market growth in Germany during the projection period. 

The Germany e-bike market segmentation includes design, type, drive mechanism, battery, and power. The type segment comprises pedelecs, throttle on demand, scooters, and motorcycles. The pedelecs class of electric bikes has been designated as a motor vehicle across various regions of Europe, necessitating special licensing and the affixing of an identification plate. The maximum speed limit for pedelecs is typically set at 28 mph, with their usage confined to private property or designated roads.

However, the classification of pedelec bikes in the United States differs from that in Europe. In the United States, these bikes are classified under low-speed electric bicycles and thus do not mandate special licensing requirements. Furthermore, throttle-operated bikes, often grouped with pedelecs in the US, provide riders with the option to reach speeds of up to 20 mph through throttle power, while incorporating a pedal-assist mechanism enabling speeds of up to 28 mph. 

 

Pedal-assist functionality in bikes is available in two forms: cadence sensor and torque sensor. While the cadence sensor gauges pedaling frequency, torque sensors measure the force exerted on the pedals, providing varying degrees of assistance accordingly.
