The Germany 3D printing market scope includes material type, application, industry vertical, technology, and component. The technology segment includes digital light processing (DLP), selective laser sintering (SLS), direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), inkjet printing, stereolithography, polyjet printing, electron beam melting (EBM), laminated object manufacturing (LOM), laser metal deposition (LMD), and fuse deposition modeling (FDM).

Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) encompasses the fusion of very thin layers of metal powder through a focused laser beam. It automatically aims the laser at points defined by a 3D model. This helps bind the material together to create a solid structure. This method melts the high-performance metal powder in layers to form near 100% dense parts. Also, DMLS, unlike traditional manufacturing practices, produces objects free of residual stresses. In addition, the objects manufactured do not have internal defects.

Further, DMLS generates hard-wearing but extremely complex components that find suitable aerospace applications. This is also attributed to the growing need for sustainable energy efficiency and continuous demand for innovation in the aerospace industry. Besides, titanium mandible implants and bone screws are manufactured using DMLS technology. These find application in the medical sector, given the biocompatibility of certain metals like silver, gold, and titanium & its alloys.

Whereas inkjet printing’s additive manufacturing approach is based on the 2D printer technology of depositing small ink drops onto paper using a jet. The ink is replaced by wax and thermoplastic elements and melted during the additive process. Upon printing these materials, liquid droplets cool off quickly and solidify to form a layer of components. As a result, the procedure is also called thermal phase change inkjet printing.

Additionally, 3D Systems has integrated its MultiJet Modeling (MJM) technology into its ThermoJet Modeler machines.

Furthermore, electron beam melting (EBM) uses a high-energy electron beam to melt layers of powdered metal to generate a form within a vacuum. It is comparatively faster than conventional manufacturing methods. In addition, it is considered a superior technology to traditional casting and forging techniques. The EBM process is ideal for applications requiring high-temperature resistance and strength.
