ASIA-PACIFIC FLUE GAS DESULFURIZATION MARKET FORECAST 2023-2032

SCOPE OF THE REPORT

Asia-Pacific Flue Gas Desulfurization Market by Technology (Wet FGD Systems, Spray Dry FGD Systems, Dry FGD Systems) Market by Application (Power Generation, Chemical, Iron & Steel, Cement Manufacturing, Other Applications) by Geography

MARKET OVERVIEW

The Asia-Pacific flue gas desulfurization market is expected to record a CAGR of 5.39% during the forecast period, 2023-2032, and is projected to garner a revenue of $22108.72 million by 2032.

The flue gas desulfurization market growth in Asia-Pacific is attributed to the governments implementing stricter environmental laws that address air pollution. Accordingly, there is a rising demand for FGD systems since they aid in minimizing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from coal-fired power stations and industrial sites.

However, the Asia-Pacific flue gas desulfurization market growth is hindered by the manpower deficit, which challenges the functioning of FGD systems efficiently.

The Asia-Pacific flue gas desulfurization market growth analysis includes the assessment of Australia & New Zealand, Vietnam, India, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, China, and Rest of Asia-Pacific. China faces a substantial burden of respiratory diseases, contributing significantly to both morbidity and mortality in the country. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 20% of China’s total deaths can be attributed to respiratory disorders. The Chinese government has established a set of regulations governing the implementation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems with the primary goal of reducing air pollution and improving air quality. The pivotal legislation in this context is the “Air Pollution Prevention and Control Law of the People’s Republic of China,” enacted in 2000, which mandates the installation of FGD systems in all coal-fired power facilities. Additionally, this law sets emission limits for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM).

Further, China is actively investing in research and development efforts to enhance FGD technologies, aiming to make them more efficient, cost-effective, and tailored to the country’s unique requirements. Collaborating with international partners enables China to access advanced FGD technologies and adopt best practices in this field.

Whereas in Thailand, within the framework of the Power Development Plan (PDP), the government provides incentives to promote the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment in coal-fired power plants. The PDP represents a comprehensive approach to advancing Thailand’s power sector, outlining the government’s goals for enhancing the nation’s power generation capacity while reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. The PDP also encompasses various initiatives aimed at promoting renewable energy utilization and mitigating air pollution, with one such measure being the provision of incentives for the implementation of FGD systems in coal-fired power plants.

The Asia-Pacific flue gas desulfurization market segmentation includes application and technology. The technology segment includes dry FGD systems, wet FGD systems, and spray dry FGD systems.

Spray-dry absorption combined with bag-house particulate collection for flue gas desulfurization (FGD) has been identified as a practical alternative to wet scrubbing for boilers burning low- to medium-sulfur (S) coal or fuel oil, as well as for waste incinerators. In the spray-dry FGD process, hot flue gas comes into contact with a finely dispersed alkaline suspension, typically a lime-water slurry, within a reaction chamber that provides a droplet residence time of 10 to 15 seconds. During their existence, the sprayed droplets simultaneously undergo evaporation and absorb sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the flue gas. The absorbed SO2 then reacts in the alkaline aqueous phase with the dissolved sorbent.

The spray-dry FGD process is characterized by a complex interplay of two-phase fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, liquid-phase dissolution, ionic reactions, and precipitation. This process can be divided into three stages: an initial phase shortly after atomization in which the droplets decelerate until they reach their terminal velocity, a subsequent constant rate drying stage responsible for most of the sulfur (S) removal until a solid shell (crust) begins to form on the surface of the drops, and a final falling rate drying stage characterized by reduced mass transfer rates until the particles are fully dried.

Some of the leading companies in the Asia-Pacific flue gas desulfurization market are Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd, Marsulex Environmental Technologies, etc.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd manufactures and markets industrial goods and transportation equipment. It also manufactures aircraft & jet engines, rolling stock, ships, construction machinery, manufacturing equipment & systems, consumer products, gas turbine power generators, and environmental & industrial plants. Additionally, it manages plant engineering services for industrial plants. The company has a vast presence in Europe, Asia, and North America, with headquarters in Minato City, Tokyo, Japan.
